The problem with that question is in the definition of "nice". Lots of times people are described as "nice" because they are always r eady to just "go along" They don't want to "argue" or "say no" "Will you watch my kids?" sure. "Can I borrow your car?" OK. Can I borrow some money? Oh, all right. Those kind of people are not being "nice" they are being stupid and they will forever be taken advantage of. Yep, they always finish last.
It is possible to be a TRULY nice person and still be strong, and confident, and alert to situations where somebody is trying to "slip one over on them" They stand up for themselves, smile, and say NO. Soon others see them as "leaders" confident, well organized in the way they live and deal with the situations of life. BUT - they keep the smile on their face, do not lose their sense of compassion for the REAL situation when a person is genuinely i n trouble and needs a leg up, and they are clearly alert, well informed, and very very good a t analysing any given situation to know if it is genuine or not. You can't put one over on that kind of person, and anybody who tries will go away disappointed. But everyone will agree on one thing. That person is not only smart.. but NICE with it. And that person, guaranteed, will never finish last

YahooLuLu is right, I couldn't agree more, but let me expound on that.
Nice people are nice people are nice people. They will always be deferential, considerate of the other person, seek understanding over selfish behavior. Therefore, they tend to align themselves with people who are not. Two people in the same mold together, nothing gets accomplished, because they are both too concerned with being deferential to the other person. So nice people finish last, because in reality that's where they place themselves.
Now, that doesn't mean they have to be shafted in the process, but that's really up to the other person to see that that doesn't happen.
