Generally, the males are bigger, brighter, flashier, more colorful, and alltogether more eyecatching than the females.

Hi there - in general if you can view a fish from the front through the glass of a tank the male is very slim in the stomach area and the females are much fatter - it is quite easy to sex some fish that way - as others have said some fish are more colourful and others have much longer fins.

it all depends on what kind of fish it is. males are usually bigger. and in some species of fish it is very difficult to tell. i have had blue paradise gouramis for almost two years and i have no idea if they are male or female.

most of the time the female is more of a bland color like finches (birds) the females are brown and the males are bright yellow fish are the same way.
