AVG is JUNK. I recommend active virus shield. It is the best one and it is FREE.

Avast and Zone Alarm are currently the best free security programs presently. You were correct to notice that AVG is not that good. Too many think is great but it's ranking for protection is fairly poor.
Each year there is a new top antivirus and firewall based upon critical performance, but my recommendation is to make sure that the products are ICSA certified. This means they were tested for stopping, quarantining, or deleting viruses, and stopping intrusions on your CPU and passed.
Regarding malware removal the free programs are rated fair or about 65% effective, and would include spybotS&D, AdwareSE, and spywareblaster. The best on the market per ranking are Spywsweeper by webroot, and spyware docotor by PCTools, and neither one is free about $29 apiece.

I have used zone alarm firewall for the past nine years. An I use Avast antivirus out of Prague. This is state of the art software that has one of the very best background scanners that will catch a virus in real time and destroy before it can enter your system. You will also get two or three times per day automatic updates. Scan all 195,000 objects in my system.
The program is free and they will ask you for your email so they can send you a free key good for one year. After one year just request a new key. The corporate version is the same, they just make corporate pay.

The combinionation of ZoneAlarm, an Avast work very well together. I have not had one virus in nine plus years.

I use AVG and I also use these.
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I'm using eTrust's AV alongside Zone Alarm and they work well together. Unfortunately eTrust is only free for one year, but well worth using for twelve months.
