Yes, in the US whenever you give you telephone number you are giving them permission to gather all and any information about you and sell it.

The zip code is used to determine where they should put more stores. The area code of the phone number is for the same purpose.

Usually it's so they can send you a mailer with discount notices, upcoming sales or new product introductions. If given the choice, provide them with your zip code. I always decline to give them my phone number to avoid being placed on a telemarketing list. Otherwise, they could circumvent the Do Not Call list because you've technically done business with them and that's allowed under the DNC registry.

Refusing to provide a phone number will not prevent you from making the purchase, so don't feel bad about it if you do. The only exception to this is if you write a check. I think they have to have a phone number in order to process the check.

Where I work we ask for zip codes for a limited time once a year to find out where are customers are comming from. Those are the zip codes my company sends their flyers to as well. I live less than 2 miles from my store and I don't get flyers sent to my home because we are such a small community that we don't get as many hits as other zip codes. Wild isn't it?

Usually, businesses which ask for your telephone number and zip code are using the information as unique identifiers which will help find the record of your purchase in their computer system. There might be ten Mary Browns who shop at a given store. Using their names would be useless when trying to keep a record of transactions for warranty purposes, or any other. Looking for records for any Mary Brown would bring up all of the records for all of them. No one could be certain of the information and to whom it applies. However, each Mary Brown would logically have a different phone number. Each phone number then can be used to identify each individual Mary Brown. This makes each phone number a unique identfier, unique to each Mary Brown, and makes finding her record much more accurate and reduces the probability mixing information among clients.

Either nothing or they want to send you things in the mail about upcoming things. Or they keep track of how far costumers drive to their store??

Allegedly to track where their customers come from, but actually to sell numbers to places that will call you and try and sell you stuff. You can refuse.
