pretty much everything will be OK with 5w-30, if you want to keep this car in good shape for as long as you have it switch to synthetic next oil change , if you are doing hi way driving next summer try to find some 5w-50 synthetic and stick with that year round but you will definitely have to pack your own oil for top ups as this viscosity range is not too popular yet

If your mazda protege is a 4 cyclinder, use 5w30, if you have a 6 cylinder engine use 10w30

i own a repair shop,and do these all the time,id use a good 10-w-30 in it ,and it will be alright ,that's what the book calls for after 50 thousand miles on it anyway but that's a good all round oil to use all year in it,,good luck i hope this help,s.

Try Ebay, or other on-line auction house for the best deal. Other than that, the vehicle is new enough you might find one at a dealership.
