An introvert is someone who is more interested in their own life. They are more likely to be solitary and do activities alone that don't require others, and they tend to be quiet/reserved, keeping to themselves, and not very social. This doesn't mean all introverts are shy though. They could just be content with being alone most of the time. Also, they probably don't enjoy large groups, although lots of introverts due enjoy smaller interactions with people.
Extroverts are on the other side of the scale, where they are more interested in other people and will invest more time in others. They tend to have bigger groups of friends, they are more social, probably enjoying big groups and lots of acquaintances. Most of their activities are likely to be social activites, like parties, concerts, sports, etc. They probably won't enjoy spending time alone as much as an introvert.

This is not a scientific answer.
An introvert tends to be shy and quiet. They prefer a dinner at home to a party at friends. They may think and ponder a lot and be better at expressing themselves in writing or other art forms. They may have many great thoughts but express them better one on one.
An extrovert tends to be open and friendly, the life of the party. They come alive around others. They sometimes cross personal space boundaries without meaning to.

Perhaps this might explain why people act certain ways. This is not only about whether someone is "shy" or not. It's a complicated concept.
An introvert derives mental energy from their own thought processes. They chose what external stimuli to absorb and then analyses it within their mind. They can often "shut things out" more easily. They can be very intelligent, or end up removed from reality.
An extrovert has a closer relationship with their outside environment. Their mental energies are derived from external stimuli... Whats going on around them has a direct impact on their state and they are less likely to hide emotion. They react more on instinct then on referring to their "internal voice". I think people who are extroverted are more confident because doubt wouldn't even cross their minds.

Their behavior is quiet and shy. hey come off as snooty, cold, and unfriendly. They fear being disliked, so they cause others to not like them. It is self-fulfilling.
An extrovert understands that everyone had social anxiety. They focus less on themselves and more on other people. They seek to break the ice, build rapport, and draw others out of their shells. They come off as friendly, confident, and caring. People like them because they don't hide behind their anxiety. They show interest in other people and make people's days.
