An introvert is someone who is more interested in their own life. They are more likely to be solitary and do activities alone that don't require others, and they tend to be quiet/reserved, keeping to themselves, and not very social. This doesn't mean all introverts are shy though. They could just be content with being alone most of the time. Also, they probably don't enjoy large groups, although lots of introverts due enjoy smaller interactions with people.

Extroverts are on the other side of the scale, where they are more interested in other people and will invest more time in others. They tend to have bigger groups of friends, they are more social, probably enjoying big groups and lots of acquaintances. Most of their activities are likely to be social activites, like parties, concerts, sports, etc. They probably won't enjoy spending time alone as much as an introvert.

Perhaps this might explain why people act certain ways. This is not only about whether someone is "shy" or not. It's a complicated concept.

An introvert derives mental energy from their own thought processes. They chose what external stimuli to absorb and then analyses it within their mind. They can often "shut things out" more easily. They can be very intelligent, or end up removed from reality.

An extrovert has a closer relationship with their outside environment. Their mental energies are derived from external stimuli... Whats going on around them has a direct impact on their state and they are less likely to hide emotion. They react more on instinct then on referring to their "internal voice". I think people who are extroverted are more confident because doubt wouldn't even cross their minds.
