I moved to a new city when I was 20 and initially made most of my friends through work and school, then made friends with their friends. You could get a part-time job that relates to something that interests you. You could visit a funky coffee house that has live music. If there's a local alternative radio station, they may sponsor community groups. Large churches have groups for young singles.

Ask yourself where like-minded people would be, And then go there.

I recommend becoming civically involved in any case, in whatever area you care about.

Are you concerned about religious conflict? Join an Interfaith group.

Do you care about the environment? There's likely to be a local group for that too.

What about historical preservation? Horticulture? Littering? Literature?

Also, librarians are wonderful sources of information about local stuff. Cultivate them.

Do you play Bridge (go to a Bridge studio-or, go learn to play)? Go to a bowling place and check on a league you can join, volunteer at charities, take a class, stroll the grocery stores, and join a religious organization. Some cities have singles clubs that you can join-----but, make sure they are legit, and not just out for your money. Many religious organizations have them. In my city the biggest ones are one at a big church here, Jewish Singles, and Christian singles.
