If she kept the tag that came with the tree, it should specify which it was. She can go back to the outlet where she bought it and get its mate. (The female has the red berries but needs a male to pollinate her). I'll bet she bought it from a chain store, because a nursery would have advised her that she needs both sexes.

If the tag is gone, there's one more hope. Look at the base of the trunk for a small paint mark. Wholesale growers often identify stock with paint marks. She can then go back to the outlet and buy the same cultivar but with a different color paint mark. Hope that works for you because I'm all out of ideas!

As someone else said, check the label. It should indicate whether it's male or female. If not, it may be a self polinating variety like Burford Holly or Berries Jubilee, (Ilex cornuta). Hopefully you have the name and can look up that specific variety and species. Also, if it has no berries this time of year, it might be a male, if it has berries, it's definitely a female.

Hollys are definately sexed "trees." The female plant bears the fruit (red berries), the male only blooms. There is no way to sex these trees until they bloom. IF there are holly in the neighborhood, you only need the female, there will be plenty of pollen to produce the berries...but if you cannot buy one with berries, there is no way to know. Good luck

well you can tell by the name usually like prince or princess self explanatory.if you dont know the name of the holly you have a male has darker smaller leaves and grows completely out of control where a female has brighter fatter leaves and grows more compact than the male.

See, now I figured the male would have the Berries. Or maybe they have the sticks?
