Self-preservstion and displaced anxiety can cause people to do some really ugly things, especially when you add a large dose of narcissism.

Sometimes when people are traumatized or victimized by others, they carry that baggage beause they do not know how to get rid of it. They seek to project their anxiety on other people as a way to attempt to resolve their own anxiety

In their narcissistic self-absorption (everything is all about them, and only about them) they seek to punish other people the way they were punished.

All destructive behaviors are really displaced anxiety. The behavior can be either outwardly destructive, or self-destructive.
