Part of what you saw had to do with Hurricane Wilma. However, five or six years ago the area your talking about caught fire in a lightening storm, and burned and smoldered for years. The inaccessibility of the region made it almost impossible to get any meaningful firefighting measures to the fire. The fire finally burned itself out three years later after destroying appox. a million acers of jungle.

They are consequence of hurricane Wilma (October 2005). Since that area is hard to reach, dead trees were left to Mother Nature's forces, but unfortunately, during the dry season, that trees were fuel to several forest fires.
Local authorities are working on rebuild the hotel zone, but both downtown and natural reserves are still waiting for full attention and investment to be rebuilt.

I went to Cancun countless years in the past. even even with the undeniable fact that there are lagoons they did not seem to be swampy to me. The land is generally sand beaches and ocean water. Even here in New England there at the instant are not flying bugs on the beaches that are on the sea.

Well, the Secretary for the Welfare of the Ecology(SEMARNAT)....whose director was (at the time of the decision) Alberto Cardenas allowed a private conominium to be built in a biosafety area...(bribe, probably not him but since he was in charge at the time... ) probably.... That biosafety area was one of the biggest "manglares" or fields of mangos....It was aggred upon that no one was to sell a biosafety area but sadly it was....hope it helps...
