Yes Chef's do taste their food, but its not as disgusting as you may think. You wouldn't want your food to be under seasoned or over seasoned, or not what you ordered. My brother works in a kitchen, and their head chef routinely checks his other cooks food to make sure they are cooking up to his standards, if not he'll jump in and correct it, his chef has tons of little spoons and forks where he can taste food as they are being cooked, and after he's done tasting the little forks and spoons goes into the dishwasher. A chef reputation is all he has, once its out the door he may as well work for some fast food joint.

If they are preparing meals at the beginning of the afternoon or evening they will taste it before they put it on the plate and they will use a spoon or fork and not reuse it or two to make sure it has the taste that they want. If it tastes good then they won't taste it again because they are using the same recipe. When you are talking about famous restaurants dealing with upper class people or famous people the Chef may taste things throughout the night. Especially if they are just overseeing the preparation, they may want to make sure the other chef or cooks are preparing the meal right.

Yes, but not off of YOUR plate. They taste the sauces and sides to make sure they are made from the standardized recipe that restaurants use, that is the executive chef's job because his reputation is at stake. When I worked in fine dining, they used the disposable plastic spoons, not one spoon over and over again.
The waitstaff and busboys taste it too, but not until it's on it's way to the trashcan. SERIOUSLY. I watched this happen over and over again. They would set a half eaten plate near the dishwasher and everyone picked at it. Ew.

Chefs almost always taste the food to make sure it's right. Nothing worse than putting out a bad dish and risking their reputation.

At my restaurant,we use spoons 1 time to taste our sauces, etc Never our fingers!!!!! and never re-use the spoons!!! And I would fire any member of my staff that ate off the guests dirty dishes. That would be an easy way for people to become ill with a contagious disease and spread it to the rest of the staff. Not to mention, it is not a socially acceptable habit for the same reason.

Yes, they do. I know this because I watched "Hell's Kitchen". Chef Ramey tasted the cooks food for quality control.
