I've always thought the above (a letter from President Lincoln to a slow-moving General George McClellan) was a wonderful example of Abe's dry wit.

this is mine, I know its not a phrase but a speach . I seen mike wallace interview the leader of china, and the leader of china recited the address, and I was embarased for my self, being an american and not being able to recite it like he did
Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

He made this quote at the Battle of Amiens, upon witnessing Australian infantry of the 2nd and 3rd divisions, ably supported by Canadian infantry (1,2,3 divs) and British infantry and tanks (18,58 divs) pour through the German lines and move up 4000 yards within two hours of the start of their attack.
The Australians were positioned at the centre, and were faced with gas (which actually provided cover) and heavy machine gun fire.
Despite rugged German resistance, the Australians took more ground in three hours than any force had taken in the previous four years. The third phase was meant to be primarily made by tanks, but the Australians advanced so rapidly, that they outpaced the tanks, and pressed the attack on foot. By the end of the day, the Australians were 7 miles forward of their start, and the Canadians 8 miles in.
As an Australian, I feel that it is one of the greatest honours our army has had bestowed upon it, by someone who really knew war.
He later described that day as the "blackest day of the German Army."

This is my favorite historic phrase, said by Ronald Reagan in front of the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, Germany, on June 12, 1987. Two years later, it really opened.
I am German, so this quote is really iimportant to me and the German history.
