A safe and cheap suggestion: pour 1/4c. baking soda into the drain. Then pour about 1/2 c. warm vinegar into drain. It will foam. Leave it for about 15 mins without running water. Then run a lot of hot water through the drain. (Do this regularly, maybe each month on a heeavily-used sink).
Next get out your plunger. Fill the sink with hot water. If it's a double kitchen sink, plug up the drain opening in the opposite side and have someone hold the stopper so it won't pop out. If it's a bath sink with an overflow, plug the overflow or have someone hold a rag over the opening. Open the stopper in the side filled with hot water and plunge. If your drain hasn't been cleaned for awhile, you will suck up all manner of black gunk. Make sure you rinse it all down with more hot water. You might want to do the sink-filling and plunging twice the first time you do this. Later, if you treat your drain more often, this shouldn't be necessary.
If the sink gets almost completely clogged, you could also try plunging alone- it usually works to clear the clog. I have also used canned air which worked ok on a bathroom sink.
Note: plunging may suck a bit of sewer gas into the room. You can smell it. Just stop if you smell it. It means that you have pulled all the water out of the U-trap. Normally water sits in that trap to act as a block to sewer gases entering the room.

There are 2 natural ways to clean out the sludge in a drain that are the absolute best. The first is a proper drain cleaning. This involves putting a snake down the drain the grease cutter attached to it and then a finishing cutter attached to it. The second is a product called BioClean. It uses "good" bacteria to eat away at all the sludge in the drain pipes.

I USE AN ACID BASED CLEANER AS LONG AS THE DRAIN IS STILL DRAINING . NO STANDING WATER YOU DON'T WANT TO DIE FROM THE CHEMICAL REACTION. IF THE DRAIN IS STILL DRAINING IT IS JUST SLOW THIS IS THE BEST BET. MAKE SURE TO READ THE LABEL TO MAKE SURE IT WILL BE SAFE ON YOUR TYPE OF PIPES.

Every homeowner at some point will inevitably run into issues with their sewer pipes and will no doubt find themselves with a clogged drain on multiple occasions. Before calling out an expensive plumber, consider trying to clear the blockage on your own with high quality dirt busting formula or cleaning tools. Also visit our pages on how to prevent future clogging and at what point it is necessary to get external help from plumbing services.
