There will always be too many self-rightous or egotistical people in this world who will treat others with disdain. However, many treat others with respect and dignity. The issue here is... what we choose to do and who we choose to be.

Because we are never truly equal .
The rich will always be above us .
The intelligent will be there too .
The poor and uneducated will be below us .
The sick will always need us .
The racists will always be on the bottom .
And the rest of us are in the middle .

Because many people still consider themselves superior to others. this may be because of skin pigmentation, wealth, power, status, education level, religion, type of job, etc...
As you can see, people don't really need a reason to be jerks
