They count the number of vehicles that use the road when the cars drive over them, so someone somewhere can assess whether it is a frequently used road. We have a lot of them around us at the moment because we have been trying to get a bypass around the town for years because of through traffic conjestion. One more bit of evidence to show exactly how many vehicles come through our town.

They are traffic flow counters. They have several uses. The 2 hose type placed a foot apart can record how many cars pass over them, the direction of the vehicles on two way roads, and the approximate speed of each car. The data is usually used by highway engineers in deciding whether to widened a road, or change traffic light patterns.

They're not speed traps but for speed monitoring over a set period (week or so). Basically it lets the authorities know how much use by what size vehicles and at what speeds the road is getting used at. If enough people speed over them expect a speed trap sometime soon.

They are used to monitor the traffic flow, they tell the local authorities how many wheels pass ove it every hour, so they get an idea of traffic flow, they use a formula to calculate the number of vehicles as some have up to 6 axles.

sometimes they tell the amount of cars that go on that road and sometime police use them to tell if on that road people speed a lot so the can position there officers better, oh and most of the time if its near a light its for a red light camera it tells what speed your going at yellow and calculates if you would be able to stop which thats bs because you might be able to stop and still get a ticket

there just traffic counters ,the state that you live in uses these to determine how much traffic that road gets so they can know when to do up grades on it or improve it this helps them determine when it might need re-surfacing or when the traffic amount grows to be more sometimes they widen a road, but that's all it is,,good luck

just to add to the fact that they are traffic counters, the highway authority will also normally do a manual count for a few hours so that they can proportion the traffic counter results into different classes of vehicles

Yeah, it is just a traffic flow monitor.
A better one is the lighted warning sign that displays your speed and tells you to SLOW DOWN!
42 mph, 86 mph 128 mpg.....He! He! I don't think it works.
