I talk about background and props, costume, not subject matter. I have always considered it to be 'The Life of Brian' spaceship and Suicide Ninja's aside, but perhaps there is a newer film to compete with it?

Master and Commander is way up there, and so (aside from the bits you mentioned) is Life of Brian!

Don't discount Mel "the Jews did it" Gibson's Passion of the Christ, either. It's close to flawless, as far as set design, props, etc.

I would say "Seven Samurai" (Schichinin no Samurai). Although made in 1954 in Black & White. The way the fims depicts 16th Century Japan. Costumes/Back Drop/And the Accuracy of Facts is Brilliant. This Film was Later produced in 1960 as "The Mafnificent Seven". If anyone gets the chance watch the Film. Brilliant. Don't Compare it with Tom Cruise's "The Last Samurai" which was crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Bridge over ther River Kwai. I recently met a man who was a Prisoner of War used to build the bridge. I asked him how accurate the film was and he said that it was all pretty authentic.
