It's not the same. They're very similar, but not the same.
The slim-line version comes with an ethernet port -- something you would have to buy with the original. The slim (pstwo) does not have an expansion bay, so it doesn't support an internal hard drive. The pstwo also has an external power source (the power cord comes with one of those big blocks in the middle). There's also been issues with some games playing on the pstwo. Here's a list of those games.

You're probably not going to put a modchip in your ps2. But if you did I think there are differences on how you have to approach it if you have the slim-line. --Just a thought.

Well, here it is, Sony's new, sleek PlayStation 2 boasting rather sexy looks and slipping onto shelves in Europe and the US on November 1 and Japan on November 3. Recommended retail price for Europe is 149 euro (approximately £100), for the US $149 and for Japan it's "open price", meaning retailers can set their own price point. Internal architecture has been redesigned for the new PlayStation 2, resulting in a slimmer (as you can see from the pics on this page) and less weighty design. Apparently, internal volume has been reduced by 75 percent, it weighs around half that of the original PS2 and, by the way, the 'face' is only 2.8cm, as opposed to first PS2's 7.8cm. In our first test run we'll chuck one out the window to see if it floats gently on the breeze.

The difference between the two is the slim doesn't have the sliding CD tray and the slim has a built in Ethernet connection for on-line play......

there is a PlayStation 3 now but it not out yet, there is no different between them i think just difference of chaps and colour etc...

slim is suppous to be better becuase it will not break as easily when it gets old and it won't freeze as much and its compatil with all the PS2 features and the old isn't and the old one breaks easier when it gets old and it freezes more

it`s quietier no fan noise and more compact for taking it with you on hol etc

there is no difference just what it says its slimmer thats all.
