In theory, Republicans believe in strong state governments. States should have the right to decide many issues for themselves. Democrats believe in strong federal government deciding for all of the country.
The rest of the things you hear about are the sideshow political rhetoric that goes around. Some is true. Others are not.
Both parties have problems with abortion issues. The Republicans are against it (for the most part), Democrats are for it. Republicans are opposed to same sex marriages, Democrats are for them. Republicans believe by supporting business you create jobs which help others. Democrats believe in helping the individual so he or she may find their own way.
In the end, I think both parties are realizing they cannot hard line on issues. Homeland Security, immigration, the exporting of American jobs, trade deficit are difficult issues that need to be dealt with quickly. Taking a "this is my stance like it or leave it" stance does not sit well with voters. I think, at least for the next couple of years, you will see the parties look more like each other than ever before.
We are definitely a nation divided. Many elections were very close. This shows how much we need to stop looking at our differences and start working toward solutions.

The basic belief system is this.
On domestic issues, Democrats believe it is their job to equalize everybody, using government programs. They call this fairness. It usually boils down to wealth redistribution. Taking from the achievers in life to give to the victims, through some sort of government program. Somehow, everyone but rich white males are victims in this world and they need government help.
Republicans believe everyone makes their own fate, and that the achievers naturally help the less fortunate, by employing them in one way or another, and through charity. They believe in reducing the role of government in our lives and setting the individual free.
I think it is fair to admit, that the Republicans in the White House and Congress today have strayed from these beliefs. They have become just another party of big government.
On foreign policy and national defense, the Democrats follow the Rodney King policy of "Can't we just all get along." They believe in currying world opinion and appeasing bullies around the world so they will leave us alone. This is a far cry from the past Democrats we revere like FDR, Truman, and JFK, who stood up and went to war with enemies of democracy and freedom.
Republican's believe security and peace derive directly from strength, both military and economic. They beleive in confronting our enemies, rather than appeasing them. They believe in doing what's right for America first, then worrying about world opinion later.

To me, the MOST striking and important difference -- at least over the last 30 years or so -- has been with respect to vitally-important issues of civil liberties and individual freedoms. It was about that long ago that Jerry Falwell... tragically... started his so-called "Moral Majority" movement (which never was remotely close to being either one), and targeted the Republican Party for infestation by its bigoted ideologies and agendas. That party has never been the same since, and continues to be poisoned by its infusion by the RRR Cult; the [Ir]Religious Radical Right. And today (as we just saw again in the latest election), most fair-minded and sensible egalitarians are thus found within the ranks of the Democrats. (But there are exceptions within both parties.)
Take these issues, for example.
Same-sex marriage. (And just for the record, I'm a grandfather of 7, and not gay.) Opponents of it have been running around getting bigoted and hateful, so-called "Defense of Marriage Acts" passed... even though there is NO way that same-sex marriage poses ANY threat to the marriage of ANY opposite-sex couple. Nothing could be more harmless. The REAL enemy of so-called "traditional" marriage is divorce! About which very LITTLE is being said or done by the hypocrites of the RRR.
And abortion. No egalitarian (and thus, very few Democrats) would ever support a hateful and mindless agenda that seeks to FORCE teenage girls and women to gestate UNwanted pregnancies to term against their will. Which would be a very real 9-month-long form of rape. But most Republicans oppose the right to choose. Busybodyishly and mindlessly. And often, hatefully.
So to most fair-minded and intelligent people, there's a world of difference between the Republicans and Democrats. Relatively speaking -- a night-and-day difference.
Other aspects of the parties pale by comparison to the willingness of the Democrats to defend individual liberties, vis-a-vis the Republicans' fervor for repressing and destroying them, for no good reason.

Most people think that voting means I want something for me. I want the world to run the way I want it to. So people vote for their own personal cause and don't think of others, but to be a good voter and fellow American you must think of all. Look at each issue and discern which ones really need help. Like, is it the environment? Is it educational issues? Is it the budget? Etc.
Then find a leader that fits those causes. That way you are voting for the bettering of America not just for yourself.

Republicans And Democrats Are But One Beast
With Two Heads
Feeding From The Same Trough
Republocrats
Demublicans
Somethin Like That
The fact of the matter is
that America as we know it (or knew it)
is being systematically destroyed,
and the politicians from both political parties
are making this possible.
My Advise
Register Independent
Vote On The ISSUES And The CANDIDATE
Do NOT Vote On Party Based Decisions

This is amusing. Let me take a look at a couple of: Democrats think that find out how to equality is to tug the wealthy right down to the extent of the deficient. Republicans think that find out how to equality is to supply the deficient the possibilities to grow to be wealthy Democrats think that find out how to stimulate the financial system is for the federal government to keep an eye on and tax small industry Republicans think find out how to stimulate the financial system is to get the hell out of the way in which of small industry and allow them to thrive Democrats think that taxing the "Millionaires and Billionaires" will repair all of our fiscal disorders Republicans think that reducing waste and useless spending and balancing the finances will repair such a lot of our fiscal disorders Democrats think than such a lot humans are too dull and incapable of caring for themselves, hence the federal government has to do it Republicans think that if given an sincere threat such a lot humans can't most effective care for themselves however will also be optimistic and efficient participants of society Democrats think that extra executive is the strategy to all our disorders Republicans think that extra freedom is the strategy to all our disorders Democrats think that every one cash is the federal government's cash, and so they a gracious ample to allow us to preserve a few of it Republicans think that the cash you are making is your cash, and also you will have to be allowed to preserve as a lot of it as feasible Democrats wish to rule us by way of corporations (Black, Latino, Gay, Women, and so forth.) Republicans wish govern us as participants I would pass on and on, however i quite have got to get again to paintings..

If you think the following list can actually be classified as "real people"........Lower bracket earners, poor people, gay people, urban blacks, hispanic people, scientific practitionists, nonreligious realists,to mention but a few, then you should probably register as a democrat, otherwise, then the republican party would more represent your elitist attitude
