always always always ask them what they are up to NOW. (strokes the ego). Be versed in their current music so you can then ask Q's about that.
Then ask about their old band - any regrets? - still keep in contact? - what really led to the breakup? - funny moments? - inspiration behind some of the songs? - etc
ask about personal - marriage, kids, family
ask about music in general - their influences, what they listen to
future projects, goals
hope that helps!

Its clear to me that most founding members of bands really wanted to be solo in the first place so why bother trying to make a band. Is it because you couldn't make it on your own?

What drove you to start the band? Why after setting up the band did you leave? Was there conflict in the direction your band was taking? All in all would you have done anything differently?

What was your first experience like having a band, founded by you?
Were they the sucess you wanted them to be, and if not was it worth everything you gained or lost?

Where do you see yourself with us in five years?
Can you imagine any circumstances why you would want to or have to leave us within the next five years?
