Maggs and Sheff will split time in RF/DH most likely, with more field time going to Maggs. Monroe isn't going anywhere. He'll continue to play left and may even get some time in right with Sheff playing left (Leyland said it himself). Maggs is not a good outfielder anymore as he demonstrated repeatedly in 2006 and Andy Van Slyke (the outfield coach and all-around kick-*** dude) is not a miracle worker. He had a few great catches that were surrounded by overall sloppy defensive play. He also lets too many balls drop in front of him (plays too deep). I know Van Slyke tried to correct that in the fielders, but I think Maggs' knee cuts his range down considerably.
Granderson will stay in centerfield for a few more years until Maybin is ready to come up - they he will move over to one of the corners.
The real losers in this deal are Marcus Thames (last year's DH and a backup outfielder) and Brent Clevlen. Thames is expendable now and could very well get dealt or he'll be stuck in Toledo this year (after finally getting his first full year in the majors at 29). Clevlen could be a future star who is currently the Tigers best fielding outfielder with a cannon for an arm, but has not yet really proven that he can be a consistent hitter. The fact that he is another right-handed hitter hurts his chance of making the club because our other outfielders are all righties (except Granderson). Now we'll probably be stuck with Gomez again as our backup just because he's a lefty when the job really should go to Clevlen.

It puts Ordonez and Sheffield splitting time at RF & DH.
Marcus Thames is odd-man out. To tell you the truth, as a Tiger fan, I am happier getting Sheffield than the rumors of Bonds at DH.
The Tigers need more consistent hitting. I am hoping to get a left handed hitter with power, but Sheffield has hit everyone so this will be good.
Remember than Sheffield was hurt most of the year and did not have his timing back to be productive in the 5 playoff games. It shows how much faith tha Joe Torre had in that they played him at first rather than Giambi.
Sheffield has been an attitude problem his whole career starting in Milwaukee. But he is a good player, bordering on great and I am sure that Jim Leyland can keep him moving towards the team concept. Good pickup for Detroit.

Leyland has said that Sheffield will get the majority of at-bats as DH. I'm a Yankee fan, and Sheffield actually liked the idea of playing first. He worked hard at learning it and said that he thought it would "extend his career", and hoped to play it in the future. He began to say he wouldn't play first base when he began spouting off to get out of New York when it became clear they were not going to give him an extension, which he did get from the Tigers.
DH is really Sheffield's best position now. He had begun to decline defensively, and Leyland said he won't be playing first base, so I don't think you will see much of him in the outfield anyway. He definitely makes the Tigers' lineup deeper, gives them a force in the middle of the order, but he does miss some games each year.

Either Sheffield will take Monroe's spot or he'll be a DH. They agreed that the Tigers will not make Sheffield play 1B, it's actually in the contract.
I suspect Monroe and Sheffield will switch off and on the field, with Thames in there sometimes.
Sheffield obviously helps this lineup...however, it sounds like the Yankees got some really good pitching prospects. I do think the trade in the long run might favor the Yankees.
Might see Sheffield play against his former team in the playoffs next season.

Sheffield - who is NOT a future Hall of Famer unless they lower their standards even lower than they already are - will serve primarily as a DH according to manager Jim Leyland (and he should know). When the outfielders need a day off, Sheffield will be the backup outfielder. With regards to the Hall of Fame statement - there are a lot of players who have much better stats and are much more deserving of being elected to the Hall than does Sheffield. The only way he should ever get in is if he pays admission.

Nothing will happen to Monroe, Granderson or Ordonez. Sheffield will become their DH.

Alot of the local radio guys say Monroe is probably gonna be traded. And like the others said, Shef will mostly DH and help rest Mags. I like the move, but we gave up a lot too. Luckily pitchers are actually plentiful for us in the minors right now.

Jim Leyland has already said that Sheffield would DH and platoon with Mags in RF.
Granderson stays in Center. He's in winter ball working on his swing.
Monroe or Thames could be traded.
Sheffield is a big bat The Tigers needed, and I can hardly wait to see him smack 45 home runs in those left field seats!
The off season has just started, and already The Tigers improved themselves big time!
This will help The Tigers short term, and in the long haul the Yankees got the best deal.
You're right. Sheffield will go to The Hall Of Fame, and he will wear The Ole English "D" there!
YAY TIGERS!!!

It means that monroe and Ordonez will get more rest now and then. Shefield will be a Dh, and will replace both monroe and ordonez once evry like wekk and a half 2 give them more rest.
