I have a son who's two and a half, is completely enamored with Elmo (as most kids have become), and loves to watch Sesame Street. As an active parent I get involved with what he watches. So here's my question: What happened to Sesame Street? When did it become so fomulaic? It follows a set patteren every episode.
Part 1
A) Some set-up story invovling a few Old-timey SS favorite
Maybe they were wished into kids, maybe Elmo needs some singing partners, maybe Rosita's homesick
B) A resolution to this story within 5 minutes
Part 2
A) Cookie Monster gives the Letter of the Day and eats it
A small video clip with the letter
B) Count Von Count gives the Number of the Day
A small video clip with the number
C) Grover's Travel Stories
A small video clip about some far-off country
Part 3
A) Elmo's World
Which is overly-structured as well
B) Closing with Oscar reading Slimey Trash Grodon
(recaps the Letter & Number of the Day)
There's hardly any muppet songs or abstract skits.

There was a delightful anarchy and wit in the early shows, mixed in with the more educational bits. I think the funny skits stuck with me more and taught me more than educational stuff. I'm guessing the reason it's changed might be a simple brain drain... with so many of the talented people that used to contribute to the show having moved on or (sadly) died. This, coupled with the fact that everything in children's lives seems to be overly-structured these days, leaving little time for simple imagination. Everything is results driven... how best to transform your kid into the next "baby Einstein"... of course parking them in front of the television is a great way to accomplish this. At least if they were being exposed to some humour and a little wit, they might actually learn something... or at least be entertained.

I agree.... although some episodes I see Big Bird and Ernie playing "Journey to Ernie" and then immediately after... they flash to a blurb about Burt and Ernie (usually Ernie having a problem sleeping and keeping Burt awake).

I don't remember Sesame Street being so structured and predictable. *shrugs* I'm not sure when the change took place as I spent years not tuning in. But now that I have a young daughter (16 months old) we've tuned in... and she shows really no interest. Hmmmm.... thinking back, I remember loving that show as well as the Electric Company which followed after. *sigh* Ah - the good ole days. "One of these things is not like the other...."

I have noticed this too. It is nowhere close to the Sesame Street I watched as a child. I found it boring and my children don't watch it.

I guess when Frank Oz died some of the impulsiveness went away. Too bad. It was a great show for kids.

It was removed from PBS and now it has suddenly appeared on HBO. I heard because it is too controversial.
