Ferrets, because you wouldn't be able to get a pigeon. They fly away too fast.

Having situated a pigeon in one room with all the necessary apparatus to make a cricket ball, and a ferret in another room with the same, I now sit here and observe their actions via a hidden camera. The pigeon pecks idly at the leather before making a mess on the floor. The bird quickly loses interest and makes an attempt to fly out of the window. The poor creature obviously doesn't understand the concept of glass. It did make an interesting thunk, squark, screek, splat as it hit the window and slowly slithered down the glass in a concussed manner usually only associated with cartoon critters. Meanwhile the ferret is has completely ignored his cricket ball making apparatus and has taken up residence under the sofa where he is currently darting in a threatening manner at an unsuspecting piece of paper. Now he has extricated himself from under the sofa and has proceeded to the main enterance of the room where he is now sniffing hopefully under the door. Ah bless, he is now trying to gain access to the room next door which contains the presently unconsious pigeon.
Conclusion- given the opportunity, pigeons prefer to spend their time in the air rather than make cricket balls. Ferrets prefer to eat unconsious pigeons than make cricket balls. This implies that neither ferrets or pigeons make good cricket balls because they both prefer spending their valuable time doing things better associated to their natural capabilities.
Please note that no animal was killed or injured during this episode as both the pigeon and the ferret used in this example are merely figments of my overwhelming imagination, and neither exist outside of my on head... unless they exist in somebody eles head. Hey you, come back with my imaginery friends!

A Cricket is tiny, its balls would be huge if you used Pigeons or Ferrets to make its balls!

Ferrets - they have tiny, strong, dexterous little hands and cold easily make a cricket ball better than a pigeon, especially a pigeon with those really manky feet.
