Jason, you do what you have to do, respect them, be polite, and distance yourself from them. Do your chores, and everything should go okay for you! You do not have to like them, and they do not have to like you, but it is such a thing as respect, on both of your parts! I hope this works for you!

You really dont. After 27 yrs of dealing with the mother in law from hell, you just learn to live with it and keep hoping for the day when peace arrives. There is nothing on Gods earth you can do or say to change their mind about you once theyve decided youre not good enough for their son/daughter. So you try to avoid any contact with them so you only have to deal with them as little as possible. Out of sight, out of mind helps in dealing with those in laws from hell. Wish you the best of luck

Move as far away as possible. But seriously, you need to speak with your spouse and get him/her to be on "your side" when it comes to hir parents. You also need to grow thicker skin. Reading the verbal self defense books by Suzette Hayden Elgin will also help with dealing with your in-laws.
If you don't have kids yet, you should work on building a tolerable relationship (if cutting them out of your lives isn't a possibliilty). Because once the grandkids are here, it's going to be harder.

You should encourage your partner to direct his parents in what is appropriate and what is not appropriate in dealing with your relationship. It's the childs responsibility. But alot of husbands, especially, shy away from this because of Mom. He should provide his wife with a secure environment, including protecting her against the parents.

Jason, you need to buy and read the book Boundaries. then give it to the difficult parents-in-law.

I had the same problem. You should try to get your spouse to talk to them first and if that doesn't work then you should try to talk to them. I let my husband talk to my mother-in-law first and that didn't work so i just kept it built up and then one day I snapped on her and that wasn't good so don't keep it bottled up inside too long.
