why do the ears of a fox point forward as sound detectors?

Because they are predators. Animals which do not rely so much on their hearing for hunting tend to have ears that are positioned to pick up sound equally well through 360 degrees as an early warning system.

Because they ARE sound detectors-that's why they are ears!
