Listen to what your customers say- that's very important. Though it sounds very simple, it is probably the most difficult to act upon and implement what your customers want.

Focus on quality and value add-on because in the long run that's what will set you apart. Be prompt in replying to any customer/ prospective customer, even if the reply is in negative- it shows commitment tp your work.

Since small businesses can't afford too spend too much on marketing, the best you can do is to get testimonials from customers that you have served to show it to your prospective customers.

Always focus on delivering your best, money will always follow. And finally- THINK BIG...thats the only way to move forward.

Keep up on the trends in the industry to see which direction it's going. Read papers, trade publications, anything you can get your hands on. This even includes knowing where the economy is going and if your product or service is going to be needed.

I followed food trends to get an idea of what to phase in or off my menus. I'd do a trial run of one month for a new item by putting it on special. Then read my register tapes and see how many I sold that month. Then I'd have an idea if it was a "turd" (as we called it), or a total hit and should be on the menu permanently. I'd listen to the customer feedback whether good or bad. I'd get a feel for what they were looking for and expecting.
