Now that the Dems are both controlling the house and senate, what do they have to do to gain your confidence in their leadership?

What would convince you that they are worthy of holding the seats and power that they have?

It would be huge if they could make some progress on universal health care. It ridiculous the amount of money the US spends abroad but has no money to insure it citizens.

I'd like to see America sign on to the Kyoto treaty. One of the things that makes Bush sound like an idiot is him saying "The science isn't in" when it comes to global warming.

Ofcourse, there is the Iraq situation, but if the Democrats can't find an easy way out of that soon, I won't really blame them. They just inherited a mess. I believe that there will never be any way that we could all agree that we did the right thing in Iraq. We can't stay forever, but if we stayed until 2020, soon as we left, the place would collapse into civil war and then we'd be "cutting and running" to some people.

I'd also like to see some economic policies that helped some of the rampant economic inequality in this country.

And we really need to give equal rights to gays. They as Americans deserve it, no matter what the religious right says about it, and the money it costs to descriminate against them from judicial fees and time to make legislation to keep them down to the amount of money it costs to kick them out of the military and replace them is just ridiculous. Some our kids are going to look back at this situation and say "I can't believe you guys were fighting over that. You didn't realize you had better things to do?"

They already gained the confidence, and that's how they took control. Now they need to do the will of those that voted them in. That's all. They don't need to be republicans, or change anything...only follow through on what they said. Same as the reps

BlimF, Sorry it is you that's wrong. We do not agree. Bush himself said to the Iraqi people.. Bush speaking after elections "does this election mean we are going to leave Iraq, no it does not".
Look at the 18-29 vote numbers. They turned the tide in many races all over America. A full 2 million more young people voted this election than did in 2002. According to CNN exit polls 60 percent of voters younger than 30 cast ballots for Democrats. These people are not stupid.
Look at the number one issue on voters minds. It was Iraq. Robert Gates will not go against Bush. Also consider this, In both Iraq and Afghanistan the USA has built permanent bases. They were built to protect the flow of oil. The only option is Bush's removal from office. It's sad I know.
The neocons would not make the mistake of a "unprecedented period of cooperation" it's not the way they ran the Congress for the past 6 years. They gave legislation to the Democrats at the last minute before a vote was called. They never once gave a inch on any issue. Even forced "filler busters" in the Senate and threatened the nuke option. I think Democrats want leaders who lead. Leading is not about taking a vote with the opposed party on a decision.
Bush's words "we earned capital in this election and we intend to spend it". He was speaking of the 2004 election which he Defeated John Kerry. Democrats would be unwise not to spend the capital they earned in 2006. Democrats can not spend that capital on there agenda if they can't get past Bush's veto power. Democrats also can not spend that capital if they can not stop the filler buster in the Senate.

The Democrat are on probation for the next two years. They will receive confidence from the people if they have positive input to solving our problems during that time.

They would have to keep the tax structure the same, they would have to show they really are committed to the safety and security of this country, and they will have to not nominate Hillary Clinton as a candidate for the presidency in 2008. I would consider those good steps.

Limit immigration. I am not particular on amnesty v. guest workers, but total numbers impact our schools a whole lot. The poor will never make enough to pay to educate their children through taxes, and we have agreed to subsidize OUR poor. We have not agreed to watch our children's education be ruined in order to poorly educate children of those illegally here, before infrastructure is in place to handle the burden. The Senate Bill had insane numbers, and even amnesty, then adding family reconcilliation on THIS side of the border would be insane numbers. Our schools are already failing.

Aren't Democrats supposed to care about schools?

They did back when I called myself one.
