the question is,
Where does matter and energy in the universe come from and where will it go?

There is no easy answer to this.

However, one possibility is that on the whole there is no net mass-energy in the universe.

Relativity shows that mass and energy have an equivalence - the famous E = mc^2. So we can really only talk about the mass-energy of the universe, and we need to keep track of signs as we account for this.

Now as we pull two bits of matter apart against gravity it costs us energy - so we give the bits of matter an energy debt if you like. The question is then, is the gravitational energy debt of all the matter in the universe less than or equal to the energy equivalent of the matter's mass itself (it can't be more, or the universe would never have expanded).

If it is equal then - in effect - the universe on the whole has no net mass-energy.

There is no satisfactory answer. There are many facinating theories, but aside from what's in the Bible we just don't know!

Where does it go?
No where, it simply changes state, shape, etc.. It can't be created, nor destroyed (by man at least).
