I think the key might lie in the fact that you do not mention having any formal training, qualifications, certifications etc. in this field of work. There was a time when a person's proven skills were sufficient for an employer. But let us look at hypothetic situation where somebody hires you and you are doing work for your employer's client. Now, something goes wrong - not because you screwed up, but for any of a number of "pure bad luck" reasons. The client demands satisfaction from your employer, and your employer makes a fight of it - because let's say there's some serious money involved. But now, the client begins suggesting that the problem arose because his work was done by a possibly incompetent person, and starts demanding to know what are the formal qualifications of the guy who worked on his job. Your employer is now stuck between a rock and a hard place, right?
If, of course, you DO have a ton of qualifications, I can't see how you can fail to command the best possible employment in your field, once you prepare a full resume and start hawking it around to the best potential employers. Put an ad in a professional magazine, briefly stating your qualifications, and the kind of salary you expect to be offered.

seriously it is a problem of utilizing the resources available.
when it comes to payment customer finds it difficult to loosen the purse strings. not knowing what field you are from(not that it matters) and which part of the globe you are from it is difficult to make any definite suggestion. my two penny worth ideas are,and you can try the following :
1. give/show free sample jobs.- that is the end of potential job
2. position yourself in a advantageous position by starting a job after accepting advance payment and linger on till you find next assignment.
3.split the job into smaller jobs one dovetailing into the next - first job may become the last, because problem gets solved when you do the first part.
4.create(or present/magnify or wait till a trickle becomes a flood) a problem where there is none and say you can solve.

all the above suggestions theoretical and not tested - at least by me.
if you still feel success is evading you, welcome aboard.

finally try E-bay
