I'm not sure what I was expecting for this match. My guess is that Sharapova can find the tennis to overwhelm Henin Hardenne, but can't harness that level of game enough to produce such play consistently. Also, the format is good for JHH if she still has health concerns - majors are long events and even at the French she didn't seem to have a full tank for the final.
It's possible that losing to MS last time made JHH more determined to win their next meeting to prevent it becoming a habit.
You don't ask about the final, but Mauresmo has shown a lot of fortitude, winning three three-setters running after a bad start. Interestingly, the last time JHH was the year-end #1, she clinched the spot by reaching the semis in this tournament and then promptly lost to Mauresmo, who lost the final to Clijsters (I think it was the year Kim was #1 for some weeks with no major in her resume). Whatever happens, one can well imagine that JHH would much rather be facing KC in the final. It's very interesting that JHH seems to get out of her own game plan and make uncharacteristic mistakes against AM that she doesn't against others. Maybe, even given a serious illness, the way in which AM completely dominated the Australian final before the retirement has gotten to JHH, who has been uncharacteristically the one to wilt at crunch time when they have met since.

Personally, I like players for their guts and determination. For that reason, I will never root for Justine Quitter Hardenne again. Do you think Maria would ever default in the finals of a major because she was getting her B U T T kicked? No. As far as the US Open is concerned, I am surprised Justine actually finished the match when it was obvious she had no chance to beat Maria on that day. It is sad that such a good player ruined her name forever by quitting like a baby.

I think she is a champion. Let's face it if you are beautiful and can half way do anything you gonna get the recognition that just the way it is. Most men look at the Face and body and if you are any good well all that helps. Remember that other Russian (The blonde, Anne) her beauty took her all the way to the top she just could not compete against the best. But all the guys was interested in her beauty. If she had won just one US open they would of gave her all the glory.

If the WTA, the ATP, the ITF, and the national tennis federations wanted to prohibit all grunting, screaming, etc at contact with the ball, they've had about 20 years' worth of opportunity. Don't blame the players; they don't make the rules or look the other way in situations like this. Next time the pro's come to your area, don't buy a ticket. *Maybe* someone in the upper echelons of tennis will get the message, but don't count on it.
