First, analyze your neighborhood, find out what kind of people reside in the area, lower income customers will be more attracted to specials, happy hours, and free popcorn, stuff like that, college kids also will enjoy good prices but also live entertainment pool table etc. Higher income may like a clean bar, with more of a upperscale atmosphere, i.e. dueling pianos, jazz band, good food, etc. Most importantly you should first find out which group of customers you wish to attract, then advertise and attack, make flyers, hire bands, run specials, and remember this.....crowds attract crowds, if you can get large crowds there even for a short but consistent time, more people will come, Run a "great" special even if you must first lose money, make flyers to advertise this special and place them where your targeted crowd can find them, hire entertainment, make a huge party and enjoy!!!!!!

Define your target market and cater to that clientele. Get a promotion going to get people into the place for a first visit and make it so charming that they come back and bring friends. Start with an invitation to a local office for 10% off drinks or a new menu entree (tacos?) on Wednesdays from 4-7 pm. Just invite one office one night ... and see what happens. What you've been doing isn't working so try something new just once a week. You dont have to spend a fortune in advertising but be creative. Check out the book, "Marketing Without Money" by Nicholas E Bade. I found it at the library.

The only ones that succeed are the ones that are run by clubs, like motorcycle gangs, or, those where alot of buying and selling of other things occur (both legal and illegal), or, where lots of loose girls hang out and maybe have access to rooms upstairs or nearby. Just a plain old regular bar has little attraction in this day and age because if you have more than a few drinks you can get DUI, and it is not too exciting anyway when you are too sober unless you have another draw like mentioned previously.

To your first question, it depends on your overhead. How much do you owe (loans, rents, etc.). Do you advertise? Do you have entertainment? Ask yourself, why should people want to come to your bar? When you find the answer, then provide it to your customers.
