Sam in my two computers I have to free program that have already installed a fix for the flaw.
Both are free and the first one is designed to protect you from, "zero day attacks". Attacks that come like this one, before the security companies even know about the attack an have a fix for security hole.
http://www.cyberhawk.com This is a free "zero day attack", program that studies the behavior of your system, or any new download to see if the behavior is different from what is suppose to be in the software. (Like the ability to download hidden data without your knowledge). You will get a pop up with an indepth explanation of the strange behavior that is not noraml. Will ask you if you want to allow, or deny. If you deny the program is blockd for good. (Plus they are linked to a world wide host of people who have this software to compare data).
Also A2Squared v 2.1 There free version already has protection from this flaw. They are out of Austria. You can download the free version and you will have total protection including rogue dialers. (Neither program will conflict with your antiviurs or antispyware program you may have installed. They will ask you for your email so they can you a free key for life. http://www.emsisoft.com

Active X gets a lot of bashing, but Active X and xml allows you to have more interactive web pages, and many web pages would not work with trem turned off. it is important not to get spyware and active X mixed up, many answers are about spyware. Spyware can install programs on to you PC, by using operating flaws and can get installed with out you seeing anything
Active X it self is not a risk, all it does is allows web sites to run controls from your PC not from their sever so they run faster as it does not have to send information back and froth along the web.
the truth is java or other scripts are far more dangerous as they run without you even seeing anything, this is why it is important to have a legit copy of Windows and update windows and virus protection regular.
File sharing programs is number 1 cause for spy ware. The software company it self often provides the software for free because in also installs advertising software which creates pop ups and spy ware which tells them what sites you go to so they can sell info to marketing companies. The content on these servers can also be virus, remember they are software or music pirates and often add virus to the software you download, also the program itself opens ports closed by windows firewall allowing people to attack you computer

What you should know about running scripts and ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer
Be cautious about allowing Web sites to run scripts or ActiveX controls on your computer. While these items can enhance Web browsing, they can also be a security risk, and it’s best to avoid using them when you can. However, some Web sites or tasks might require them and you will have to decide whether to trust ActiveX controls that Internet Explorer blocks for your safety.
What are scripts and ActiveX controls?
Scripts, ActiveX controls, and other Web browser add-ons are used extensively on the Internet. They can make browsing more enjoyable by providing toolbars, stock tickers, video, animated content, and more. These programs can, however, malfunction or give you content you don’t want. In some cases, these programs can be used to collect information from your computer in ways you might not approve of, possibly damage data on your computer, install software on your computer
on explorer > hit on tools >manage ADD ons . disable all add ones
