The Republican party waved the flag and shouted "terrorist sympathizer" at every civil libertarian who attempted to defend the US Constitution, the separation of powers, the Bill of Rights, the Geneva Conventions' proscriptions against torture. We have a president who behaves--with the approval of his party--as if he were above the law.
In violation of his oath of office, Bush used signing statements to negate laws passed by Congress, not with a veto, but with his personal opinion. Bush, thus, elevated himself above the rule of law that has protected America from becoming a tyranny and made a mockery of the separation of powers that are a foundation of American liberty. Bush needs to be told that one more "signing statement" and he will be impeached, convicted, and turned over to a War Crimes Tribunal.

The notion that Americans can be protected from "terror" by giving up the Bill of Rights(and we have) is absurd. Democrats are complicit in this absurd notion. Too many have been intimidated into voting for police state legislation, because they lacked the GUTS to call police state legislation by its own name. The fact is, some legislation passed during the Bush administration is far more dangerous to Americans than Muslim terrorists.
With the overnight destruction of civil liberties that were 800 years in their creation, the United States stands at a watershed. If the legislation that has been put on the books permitting spying on Americans without a court warrant, legalizing torture and self-incrimination, and repealing habeas corpus and the right to an attorney remains on the books, the United States will be controlled by regime regardless of which party is in power.

When, and only when, the Democrats have erased the Bush administration's police state legislation from the books, thus restoring the bread and butter of the Constitution, they should clear the air on other issues of "importance".
Bush's rule has devastated American civil liberties and American prestige and leadership capability. Can Democrats restore American liberties and leadership, or will a lust for power corrupt them, too, and cause Democrats to retain the unconstitutional powers Bush has created?

"notme" Nancy Pelosi has said "impeachment is off the table" Howard Dean said "I know half the country wants us to impeach the President and all that kind of stuff but we're not gonna do that - we're not gonna do that."

It might be a long question,it's an important question dammed! You make very strong points
Too many think everything is OK now, like hooray "we" won.Politics isn't football!
Too many Democrats are just puppets for the same interest groups as Bush and his hoodlums. The military industrial complex isn''t gone, the neofascist patriot act isn't gone.
Taking the house and senate form the far right should be the beginning, not the end of liberating America.
Every American should keep the pressure on their congress and senate. They work for you.

Unfortunately, most people have been convinced that they needed to give up civil liberties for their "protection" that the Democrat will be perceived as terrorists supporters if they restore them.
I think it's unlikely any change in that direction will happen during the next two years. I feel such return to constitutional freedoms will follow the 2008 elections.

no longer in elementary terms could those rules reason RATIONING-------the rationing could enhance steadily worse 12 months via 12 months as further and extra well being care specialists flee their chosen container and much less people could desire to flow into the sector of drugs by way of insane restraints.----and then like sands by an hour-glass the equipment could at present grow to be slowed down via a loss of qualified well being care specialists inflicting existence-threatening long delays for care. Of course they will remain part of the problem. Both parties are very similar indeed. There is no major difference as they both serve the same corporate master. They will do whatever is best for the money men. There is no real freedom in the US only the illusion of it to keep you in line. They will take away these rights as it suits their needs at will.

okay, i will give you something to sneer at and ridicule. it will get a lot of thumbs down votes but i have to tell you.
neither the democrats nor republicans can fix this country. it is far beyond the ability of man to repair.
the only hope this country has is for every man and woman to repent and ask God's forgiveness and divine guidance for this nation. it will, of course, never happen. so we are doomed to reap what we sow.
if you think it's bad now, you ain't seen nothing yet.

If you read the news, you'll see that Congressional oversight of the Bush administration policies is a major priority of the Dems. Things can't be repaired if they never see the light of day.

Also, most of the Democrats voted in,didn't beat the incumbents by much, most races were quite close and were won by CONSERVATIVE Democrats, ones who have nothing in common at all with the far left radical commie fools you see on this site everyday, so theres not going to be much "change".People will see this and the Reds will have it all back after one term..

The problem is two parts....one part GOP one part DNC. Democrats were elected to fix the problem...let's see how they intend to check the White House. I don't expect change over-night but I'd rather not wait two years.
