I currently live in Chelsea but it's too posh and pretentious and the neighbors don't seem to get to know each other. Plus full of outsiders vs. locals, and too many strollers and middle aged couples for a single guy.

So... where to go? Single, 30s, straight, cultured, American. like coffee shops, quiet pubs, independent restaurants and shops, art galleries, you get the picture

thanks!

I would suggest either Hampstead NW3 or Highgate N6. They actually are villages and are both absolutely beautiful and great places to live. Both are on the right on the Hampstead Heath (which is without a doubt the best park in London) and have scores of great pubs. Being 30, i would recommend you live in Hampstead. It has tons of cafes and restaurants and great local shopping, the fantastic Everyman Cinema, the Screen on the Hill, the Hampstead Theatre, - the list goes on and on. Also it's full of young, beautiful, cultured people and is just a short hop down the hill to Camden Town. It's on the northern line and in zone 2.

Dulwich Village is in zone 2. Served by East Dulwich, North Dulwich and West Dulwich Railway stations

It has the famous Dulwich Picture Gallery, a fantastic pub, very villagey atmosphere at times, Dulwich Park with it's Rhododendron walking area etc etc etc.

It was good enough for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman a few years back.

Belsize Park. Its between Camden and Hampstead.

Its got a quiet village feel, or as quiet and village as you can get it London!
Its full of young people(&young fit women)! Loads of pubs, resturants, coffee shops, galleries so on.
And as its so close to both Camden and Hampstead you've got the best of both worlds. (The clubs and young scene at Camden or the more cultured vibe in Hampstead)

Failling that try Primrose Hill. Really lovely area but a bit to "Celeb" for my liking...Its where Kate Moss and her chums live ('nuff said!!!)

Abbeville village in Clapham South SW4. Period properties, coffee shops and unique boutiques and browsing stores plus not far from Clapham South Station. Quite expensive though.

Never lived in London, and dont know what zone its in, but Blackheath seemed quite nice and village like, with all the amenities you described. Not far from Greenwich either.

I live not far from you in SW6, Fulham, not too bad, prefer Notting Hill Gate where I originate from. My fave place although expensive & pretentious is Hampstead, my part of Fulham is bearable but not ideal.
