Sort of. The present and the future takes precedence over the past. One builds the present and future with the tools one has, including memories. Memories change. Pain fades and melts away with the sunlight of a glorious new day.
We hold onto the memories we treasure, and discard those which we do not, or those that may will harm us, or hold us in fetters.
Edit: We do all have selective memories, and choose to remember what we wish to remember. I don't fear Alzheimer's, because I know where to get desmopressin.
Edit2: Not all memories fade away. I haven't seen my grandmother in over forty years, as she died when I was quite young, but I do remember her, and sitting on the porch eating ice cream with her, smelling the wisteria and wax lugustrum(sp?) plants.

Memories that don't matter fade away. If it was something important than it's hard to forget. Only if you have amnesia.

All memories reside in the brain and the brain can't resist the effects of time so yes... time is the greatest thief of memories...

On a long enough timeline, everything fades away. So you may as well enjoy yourself now.

No, the important ones don't. And even some that seem trivial stay deeply embedded and come forward every now and then. It's hard to know why we remember certain things while other things are forgotten immediately.

No, memories of family that are deceased is still and always will be fresh in my mind. Failed relationships and other things ease over time.
