Bush and Pelosi have been discussing 'comprehensive reform', read, 'you give me guest workers and I'll give you amnesty'. However, Homeland Security has said processing just the illegals here under the Senate Bill would create a 10 year back log. At first blush that isn't good news for anyone legally immigrating. However, Gates also immediately began pushing for skilled workers, and he has both clout and celebrity value.

The adminstration seems to be jumping on immigration as the only area where there may not be gridlock with the new Congress. Question is how all of the populist Democrats who ran on border security to defeat Republicans will vote.

I doubt it so much that I am going to stick my neck out and say it is not going to happen and Bush is not even thinking about this issue right now and will not for the next two years.

Even with the huge swing in the balance of power this week, the rank and file of US lawmakers are more concerned with getting the US out of two wars we are currently bogged down fighting.

Bush is not going to risk the rest of his political career or the Republican party to stick his neck out before 2008, especially in regard to immigration; which the rank and file of Bush's conservative base voters seem to be rabidly against any sort of immigration laws other than building a fence against the Mexican illegals, right now. (a truly stupid endeavor; I live in Texas and I know)

Although our country my benefit from Schedule A workers; the lawmakers are not going to get involved in any sort of immigration issue that lets foreign aliens into the country legally for the next two years.

Always possible. If it happens it would be next year, since he would be a lame duck prez in his final year. Not much Congress can do or the public can do to him at that point.

If he can find a way to get cheap labor over here and take money away from his own people, then yes he will do it.
