I'm doing time cards manually (I start work at 10:18 and end at 4:23, how many hours is that?)

Work in 24 hour times.

10:18-16:23

16-10 is 6 hours.
23-18 is 5 minutes.

6hr 5mins.

For an automatic way of doing it, visit:
http://www.timeanddate.com/date/timeduration.html

Just enter the hours and minutes, leave the days and months blank. It will accept 4pm or 16 as an entry for hours.

Yet another way, and good if you want to do them in batch. Use Microsoft Excel. Enter all the start times in 24 hours format in one column, and all the end times in 24 hour format in the next column. In a 3rd column, in the first cell type = then click the top cell in the 2nd column. now type - and click the top cell in the first column and hit enter. This calculates the first row. Now click on the result cell again, and you'll notice a box in the bottom right corner, hold and drag this (should get a + symbol) drag down to the bottom row, and it auto fills in all your formulas.

Here a way to do this

I set it up like this :

hh/cc/mm/cc/ss
dh/cc/dmm/cc/dss
HH/cc/MM/cc/SS
----------------------------

h= hours
c =number of carrys from proceding column i
m= minutes
s= seconds
dhh = hours difference from 12:00 o'clock
dmm= minute difference from 12:00 o'clock
dss= seconds difference from 12:00 o'clock

H= hours
C=number of carrys from proceding column
M = minutes
S= seconds
for your problem the setup is:

hh/cc/mm/cc/ss -{ this here so you can kept track of what-what}
#10/00/18/00/00 - { ingore the # symbol it for postioning things
#00/00/00/00/00## here it add no value to the problem at all }
#04/00/23/00/00
--------------------------

okay step 1 is

Did you go over the 12:00 oclock on the clock ?
answer : yes

Then subtract 12:00 fron 10:18 and put in the difference section of the setup Like so:

# 12:00 { 12:00-10:18 = 11:60 - 10:18 = 1:42}
#-10:18
------------
# 01:42

now ignore the 10/00/18/00/00 part

and put this in the hour diffrence part and add it like so:

# 01/00/42/00/00
#+ 04/00/23/00/00
-------------------------
#05/00/65/00/00

see if the minutes and seconds column is equal to or greater than 60 if it is so then subtract 60 from it and put a one in the carry section and put the result of the subtration in it place in the minute or seconds column Like so:

05/01/05/00/00

add the carry to the next section ahead like so :

06/00/05/00/00

or

6:05
so it was 6 hours and five minutes you worked

hope this helps

Simply You've to convert it to 2400h.

10:18 am = 1018h
04:23 pm = 1623h

Then,

1623h - 1018h = 0605h

It means, 06 Hours and 5 minutes.
