Use o/d all the time unless you keep slowing down and picking up, this makes the transmission shift more so you will have early wear on the transmission. o/d lowers engine rpm, when reduces fuel consumption

I turn off the O/D while dribbling in traffic and downtown driving. the O/D off feature prevents the 5th speed to engage thus giving you more zip to your car. Monitored during 6 months (300 miles a week) I get extra 0.7 mpg this way.

If you keep the OD off when you get into the highway, the engine over-revs. I have not measured the mileage difference on highway but I suspect would have the opposite effect. Here I keep it on.

Your owners manual will tell you the specifics. If you do not have the manual you can call the company that built the car & order one, or check at the library. If you do not use it correctly after time your O/D will go out. I recieved several sugestions, they all contradicted each other. If it was meant to be left on at all times. Why do they have access to turn it off?

Leave the O/D on at all times. The car will get optimal gas mileage that way. The transmission was designed to run that way, and you don`t have to worry about shifting into O/D, (where, when etc.) The only time you would need to take it out is maybe to slow down without braking, (mountains, long downhill runs) or if some jerk is tailgating on the freeway, just pop it out of O/D and watch the expression on his/her face in your rear view mirror. It`s like "brake checking" the idiot without hitting the brakes. Just be sure you have enough room in front of you to speed up quick before (s)he rear ends you, and then ignore the one finger salute you`ll get as they pass.

Leave your vehicle in OD. At slower street speeds your engine won't even shift into OD. It will do so automatically at about 45mph on the highway.

Use Over-drive all the time, except for towing or pulling grades.
It'll help fuel economy, and less wear on engine, as it turns slower.
