That blue screen which appears on left side in windows xp when you open any explorer windows is called as Task Pane. It can be restored by using this method

** go to start menu
** right click on my computer and choose properties
** under the Advanced tab click on the settings button
** in the dialog box that appears check "Use Common tasks in folders"

This should restore the task pane

Open your "windows explorer" or a window such as "my computer" or "my documents".
on the menu bar click "Tools">FolderOptions, a new window will be opened.
On "General" tab check the "Show common tasks in folders " and Apply,OK.
