what does the little time piece next to the smiley face indicating that someone is on line mean?

This icon means the person is "logged on" but they have not pressed any computer keys. They are "IDLE". Just press the "BUZZ" about 10-20 times. That will wake them! And it's such a polite thing to do.....

The little time piece is an idle symbol. Means the person is away from the computer and not using their messenger.
