I wouldn't worry too much about it as everything is carcinogenic if you have too much - including the oxygen in the air we breathe!
Anything that burns creates carcinogenic chemicals, whether it's natural, like wood or grass, or artifical like plastic.
However, try to go for the more natural looking and smelling ones if you can. Hand-made items generally have less artificial ingredients and so are generally less carcinogenic.
For incense, I'd recommend Nag Champa Agarbatti (comes in blue boxes and smells gorgeous), though I don't really know about candles as I don't often use them. If you're content with just the scent of honey, then beeswax candles are very nice, but be careful as they burn hotter than most candles.

To be honest I would stick to an aromatherapy burner, it smells so nice, and you don't get smoke that stains the curtains.... Try this book, it's good. You can use aromatherapy oils all around the house and for anything!!

If you can afford them try PartyLight candles - they're high quality. For cheap, you can't beat the Jewish candles sold at the drugstore - they're pure paraffin & certified kosher.
