I believe that inorder to do that you must have a permit first then you can play your guitar for money. The permit is basicly for the area in which you are playing.
If you do not have a permit police do have the permission to ask you to leave or even arrest you.

Some cities have ordinances against public entertainment without a pemit. Some may limit where you play. You may e restricted to play in public areas and not in frront of a store for instance, ot perhaps not where there is public transportation.

It depends how the rules are enforced and to what extent also

You either check efore hand or take the risk of a ticket or arrest to find out. .

Most large cities allow u to play, just don't ASK 4 money, instead just open ur guitar case &sit it near u ona ground, or it is always legal if u purchase a permit.

It's not illegal to play your guitar, I know that. Collecting money is a whole other issue. You'd have to check with your city.

This totally depends on which, "downtown" you're talking about. Normally it is okay to do such a thing, but check with the city.

that's how BB King got started, it's also why he turned to the blues instead of gospel. They gave him more money for blues.

That was also 70 some odd years ago, so you better check your local laws.
