I haven't run across that situation yet.
Sometimes, if the question isn't clear or coherent, I ask them when they have to be back at the mothership.
On Y!A, I read a lot more than I answer.
In a pinch the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42.

On YA!, I research. But outside this site, in my daily life... the way I react depends on the circumstances and on the situation. If I'm in school, then I'm surely in trouble and there's nothing I can do but try to excuse myself somehow. If it's a regular situation and I wouldn't embarass myself by admitting, then I am honest.

I move onto the next question. You only get to answer so many questions each day, so I make sure that I respond to those questions that I would be able to answer.
In real life, I would just say, "I don't know, sorry."

Sometimes I answer if I don't know if I know something closely related to what is being asked. Sometimes I ask for further information because I don't understand the question.

I tried that once and I got a major league bashing (Violation report, loss of points which triggered a Violation Warning Letter) so I avoid those questions.
It's just not worth it

I usually laugh and say I don't know. Then It bugs me so I have to find out the answer.

If answer is something that is searchable, that I do a bit of surfing. If not, simply keep quiet, pretending that never was on that question.

If someone asks me a question face to face and I don't know, I say so. On Y&A , I simply don't answer.
