What is smaller .. 14.5% or 14.9% and why?

I'm doing my maths homework and i have been given 9 answers to choose from .. it's either 14.5% or 14.9% but I don't know which is smaller lol

When you compare the two numbers before the decimal point (.)they are both the same.. 14

so if you have to look after the decimal point

The numbers after the decimal point represent parts of a whole or parts of 1 (there are ten parts in total).

14.5% has 5 parts of the 1
14.9% has 9 parts of the 1

Hope that makes sense. Thought I would try to explain it rather than just give you the answer or tell you how stupid you are. I guess people forget we all learn something for the first time once.

14.5%=145/1000 and 14.9%=149/1000
And you must be remembering the old rule that if two or more fraction have the same denominator ,then the fraction having the bigger numertor is always greater that nthe fraction having the smaller numertor/
Therefore,149/1000 >145/1000 or.14.5%<14.9%

Its 14.5%, genius! Why? Because 14.5% is less than 14.9%. You crazy kids with your picture phones, asbo's, hooded jumpers and happy slappings but still cant get a simple maths question right.

Ok, I'll try to explain it so you can remember.

The (.x) in your example .5 & .9 equate to tenths, so

14.5% = 14 & 5/10ths percent
14.9% = 14 $ 9/10ths percent

5/10 or 1/2 or 50%
9/10 or 90%

Wow, what grade are you in that you don't understand basic decimal points?

14.5% is smaller because if you times both percentages by 10, 145 would be smaller than 149.

14.5% is smaller. 14.9% is almost 15% whereas 14.5% is halfway between 14-15%.

14.5% of them = 145 people
14.9% of them = 149 people
