Whilst surfing the net someone plastered my PC with a Virus. My Internet Explorer 7 now has a permanent home page "telling me" that... my PC MAY have been infected and directing me to a website that, for a payment, will clear it. I Have PC-Tools and McAfee. PCTools seemed at first to have picked up the virus but it i still have int explorer 7 affected. I can use the PC and access Yahoo normally through Mozilla Firefox. I have scanned the PC using McAfee and also with PC Tools to no avail. I am trying not to have to re-install the OS (XP-Pro) so I am desperate for a solution. QUESTION: Internet Exp 7 infected is it a malicious *.dll ? Or a *.EXE hidden somewhere ? Where can it be found and therefore deleted ? I have uninstalled and then re-installed IE7 but the problem remains. Any help would be very much appreciated.

It's worth getting an expert to check your computer out at:

http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/ubbthreads.php/Cat/0

Register, go to the Hijack This Forum, read the instructions on how to post a log, give a brief description of your problem (like you've just typed) and post your log there. The guys in there are fantastic and trustworthy and will guide you through in getting rid of anything nasty from your computer.

You must post a HijackThis log as per the instructions, not just your problem.

Hi There, Your internet explorer has been infected with a browser hijack spyware. Basically it sits itself in the the registry and it will also run in the background. You can try using Lavasoft ad-aware available from lavasoft.com and download the free personal version. You can remove some elements of the spyware manually. Now heres what you do.
press CTRL ALT DEL and go to the processes. scroll down the list and look for any dodgy sounding filenames. End that program (end task) and make a note of it.
Then do a file search for that filename
and delete that filename/directory ( this is risky but 9/10 times if you delete a windows file then it always replaces itself any way. so its pretty safe)

Note its hard to say which file it will be but basically it will be something like spyware, or spytools or some convincing name which may lead you to believe that its for real. There may also be things like casino, and games etc.. which if you check the date created should give you an idea of whther it should be there or not.)

Ideally you should download a spyware tool from download.com ( a free one which has a good rating one which pays particular attention to broswer hijack.

Hope this helps, any questions feel free to email me singing_saagar@yahoo.com

I'd be trying any of the suggestions above, they all sound like good ideas. Personally i use AVg or SpyBot search and destroy, you may want to check these out once you have your problem solved. Good Luck :o)
