There are many....but 1. Saving Private Ryan and 2. Patton stand above all.....not because they are war movies; but they reflect basic human elements too.

Band of Brothers (nearly perfect)
Patton (though the battle sequences are now dated)
Saving Private Ryan (though apart from the Omaha Beach sequence, kind of ridiculous)
Pearl Harbor is not a war movie, it's a romance with a WWII background and a terrific (though terribly inaccurate) Pearl Harbor attack sequence.

Stanley Kubrick's first big movie with Kirk Douglas. I think it was Paths of Glory (but there was another good one called Tunes of Glory so I am a little confused). But these are movies that show how insane war is and how cruel.
