If you need to take a screenshot of a particular operation, and email it to support, then it is advisable to compress it. Doing this as a JPEG is a fairly easy process - if you know what you are doing.

Taking the screen shot
Windows has built-in mechanisms for grabbing a window or the whole screen and placing it in the Windows' clipboard.

If you need to only grab the current window, then press Alt-Print screen (i.e. hold down the Alt key, press and release the Print screen key, and then release the Alt key).

If you need the entire screen, then simply press Print-screen.

Saving the screen shot
Once you've taken the screen shot, it is in Windows' clipboard. To get it out of there, run Microsoft's Paint program. This is normally located in Start -> Programs ->Accessories -> Paint.

If this is the first time you've used this, and you want to take screen shots regularly, then it's best to change the default size of the image. To do this, open the Image -> Attributes menu. Set the width to 80 and the height to 60. Then, click on "Okay". This will set the image size to 80x60 each time you start Paint.

With this running and in the foreground, select Edit -> Paste (or press Ctrl-V). At this point, it may say "The image in the clipboard is larger than the bitmap. Would you like the bitmap enlarged?" - click on "Yes".

If it does not ask you this, then your screenshot is smaller than the default image size, and you will end up with white around the image. You may also get white space if the image was taller but not wider than the default size.

Now, click on the "Free-Form Select" button (top left). This fixes the image in place. Now, select File -> Save As... This will open a standard save dialog box, where you can select the name and the location of the file to save. By default, it will save as a BMP file (which is uncompressed, and can be very very large). The bottom-most drop-down is "Save as type...". If you click on this, you can select JPEG as a save type - this will result in a significantly smaller email size than BMP.

The print screen key does not mean that it will send whatever is on the screen to a printer - it means that it will print the current screen i.e. take a screenshot of whatever is on the screen, and make it into an image to paste into (for example) microsoft word, microsoft paint, corel draw etc.

So, if you press the print screen button, open up an application then select 'paste', you will have a screenshot of your current screen. You can also take screeshots of the current application (eg ms word, intenet explorer, a game) by holding down ALT and pressing print screen. Just try it and see what happens.

Depending on your keyboard layout you may need to use a shifing key, (such as your Fn (function) key on a laptop) to make print screen work.

some keyboards have a "Fn" or "Function" key, you have to press this along with Print Screen. If you want to see the captured image, paste it somewhere, like word, openoffice, or mspaint
