are there like kinds or stages of thumbsucking?

From my personal experience... There aren't really stages. My little sister has been sucking her thumb since day one. We have tried all of the thumb sucking liquids that supposedly taste bad or burn, but she would just suck that off. She is currently 11 and still does it. I even know a 16 year old that does. I feel that when the child is young it is better to get them sucking on pacifiers so that way when you need to ween children off its easier because they aren't depending on a body part that is always there. I have heard that there may be something your dentist could put in the mouth that will help prevent it, or at least prevent the teeth from growing in crooked.

Stages: as in novice thumbsuckers and professional thumbsuckers?
For whatever reason, some children suck their thumbs (or fingers). It might last for a short time or it can last for years. So I guess that for the "stages" part, you could also mean infant, toddler, child thumbsucker.

My brother sucked his thumb until he was 16. The doctor told my mom that it was just something that he did when he was concentrating on things. It was a habit from childhood that carried over into the teen years, but the older he got, the less he did it and then it became part of the 'thought process' and he did it without thinking about it. He stopped by 17 or 18 and doesn't do it now, but he was really bad when he was younger.
The parents paid the price in dental bills too.

My 2.5 yr old NEVER used a nuk(pacifier)~ he ALWAYS sucks his thumb..None of my other 3 children EVER sucked their thumbs...I don't think there are stages...Joey only sucks his left thumb...He's right handed and uses that hand to carry cookies! He's actually started using his thumb LESS than before..so maybe he's out growing it.

I dont know...neither one of my kids sucked there thumbs.
