Is it true that first borns usually weight less than later siblings because they have no umbilical cord to eat? When my sister had her first child her obgyn advised her to keep the umbilical cord from her first pregnancy at home in her freezer so that if she decides to become pregnant again she can just reinsert it back into her uterus so that her next child will have something to feed off of. She keeps the old umbilical cord at home in her freezer and she is going to reinsert it herself when she decies to have her next child. Did any of you try this method and does it really help the next child in feeding?

I wouldn't put anything that has been in my freezer up into my uterus. What kind of question is this?

This is totally ridiculous. Each baby has an umbilical cord. The reason for saving the umbilical is not for feeding the next embryo. There are companies that bank the cord blood. This is done so that if the child has health problems later on the stem cells from the cord blood can be used in the treatment of the disease.

Absurd.
In some cultures, people keep the placenta to plant in the ground in order to transfer the nutrients to a plant or tree designated as the baby's.
Babies get their nutrients and nourishment THROUGH the umbilical cord, not by chomping on it. That doctor is a quack, or you are kidding. No one should be putting anything into their uterus once a baby is in there. The threat of infection is too great.

You are kidding right? You just can't be serious. Developing babies do not eat umbilical cords. Each pregnancy develops it's own umbilical cord and the nutrients from the mother travel to the baby that way. Babies do not eat in the womb. If an OB/GYN advised this, he should be reported ASAP..the Dr. is a quack.

Um that is the dumbiest thing I have ever heard, babies don't eat umbilical cords, they get blood from the mother that is enriched with the vitamins and nutrients they need. That blood flows through the cord. That is all a cord is good for, caring blood. Not eating.

Just think logically for a second, how does a baby with no teeth eat a cord????? Hmm?

If your sisters first obgyn told her to do this then she needs to call the AMA and have his medical lic. taken away

First of all, her obgyn is crazy and not much of a doctor at all. Where did he get his license? In east bum screwed corner?
Either he's nuts and needs to be turned in to the medical board, or she's misunderstanding what he said. (And I hope it's her misunderstanding).
1) They do keep the blood of the umbilical cord now, but not at home, it's usually kept in a clinic and kept frozen until needed.
2) If she does insert the old cord into herself, she's gonna get one hell of an infection! Along with risking the life of the unborn child.
3) Tell her to go to www.webmd.com and look up pregnancy and babies. It should tell how just how full of s*it her doctor is, if he told her to do this silly stuff.
The baby will draw nutrition from the mother, that's how they eat while hiding in the womb. The umbilical cord transfers the nutrients from mom to baby, that's how that works.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell her to change doctors!!! At the very least, go to the offered web site and have her look it up for herself if she doesn't want to believe me.

i have never even heard of that before. I have two kids and my second weigh less then my first. My doctor have never told me to keep the umbilical cord the only part that came home with us was the part still connected to the baby and when that fell off i throw it away.

DON'T EVER TRY INSERTING ANYTHING INTO YOUR UTERUS! you may miscarry or have a serious infection.

the baby gets all the nutrients it needs from the placenta.

the umbilical cord merely serves as the convoy of nutrients from the placenta to the baby. it functions as the baby's lungs and is therefore unnecessary once the baby takes in its first breath. the cord is buried or thrown away after the baby's delivery.

Oh my God...I have never heard of such a thing (I'm a mother of 3)...could be true....research has found that the ambilical cord if rich with nutrients and has recently been used to help save lives but to inserting it so the next child can feed off it is beyond me...

Okay, first of all, your sister needs to talk to her doctor before she does this! She could get a serious infection!
Secondly, normally babies feed off the placenta... that is the way God inteneded it, and anyways I was the firstborn and absolutely the biggest! Also why do you even want the baby to be bigger?
