Neil Alden Armstrong (born August 5, 1930) is a former American astronaut, test pilot, and Naval Aviator, and was the first human to set foot on the Moon. Armstrong's first spaceflight was Gemini 8 in 1966, for which he was the command pilot. On this mission, he performed the first manned docking of two spacecraft together with pilot David Scott. Armstrong's second and last spaceflight was as mission commander of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission in July 1969. On this famous "giant leap for mankind", Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface and spent 2.5 hours exploring, while Michael Collins orbited above.

Frank Borman and James Lovell (later of Apollo 13 fame) were the first earthlings to visit the moon. They arrived and orbited the moon around Christmas in 1968.

They qualify as the first to visit because they were the first people to see the dark side of the moon.

As pointed out previosuly, Armstrong had the first step on the moon.
