Last I heard, Easter Island has nothing to do with early man at all. More recent studies are dating the constructions well within the second millenium. Wish I could remember where I read that, but I am sure it has something to do with environmental destruction. i.e. the more recent population lived an unsustainable lifestyle and wiped themselves out. Really wish I could remember that article's details. Sorry.
